Description

A spooky and delicious Halloween dessert, the Witches Brew Halloween Trifle layers chocolate or red velvet cake with pistachio pudding, cherry cream cheese mixture, whipped cream, and festive candy toppings for a fun and festive treat perfect for Halloween parties.

Ingredients

Scale

Spumoni Trifle

  • 1 8-inch chocolate cake or red velvet cake (store-bought, mix, or homemade)
  • 2 99 g packages pistachio instant pudding
  • 1 540 ml can cherry pie filling
  • 1 8 oz package light cream cheese
  • ½ cup sliced almonds
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar

Toppings

  • 20-25 large green mints (scotch green mints)
  • 5 white mints for eyeballs (scotch white mints) or jumbo candy eyes
  • Black edible marker
  • Red edible marker
  • 5-10 small candy eyes
  • Oreo cookie crumbs for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Make Worms: Prepare the worms at least one day in advance to allow them to set overnight for the best texture and appearance.
  2. Make Pistachio Pudding: In a large bowl, prepare the pistachio pudding according to the package instructions and set aside.
  3. Whip Cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the whipping cream until soft peaks form, then add the white granulated sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks develop.
  4. Prepare Cherry Cream Cheese Mixture: Beat the light cream cheese for 30 seconds until smooth, then add the cherry pie filling and beat until well combined. Stir in the sliced almonds.
  5. Assemble the Trifle: Break the cake into pieces and place them in the bottom of a cauldron or trifle dish. Layer half of the pistachio pudding over the cake. Top with the cherry cream cheese mixture, followed by all the whipped cream, and then the remaining pistachio pudding.
  6. Create Toppings: Using the black edible marker, draw black circles on the white mints to create eyeballs. Add red lines with the red edible marker to mimic bloodshot eyes, or alternatively, use jumbo candy eyes.
  7. Decorate: Arrange the large green mints and small candy eyes on top of the trifle. Sprinkle Oreo cookie crumbs under the worms and a small amount on top for added texture and effect.
  8. Serve: Serve the trifle chilled and enjoy the spooky presentation and delicious flavor.

Notes

  • The worms require advance preparation and setting time overnight, but they add a striking spooky effect to the trifle.
  • If you prefer less mint flavor, add the mints just before serving, as leaving them on the trifle for long periods will cause the mint flavor to seep into the dish.
  • No special equipment is needed, but using a cauldron or trifle bowl enhances the spooky presentation.
  • You can substitute store-bought cake if you want to save prep time.
