Description

These 20 Minute Thai Basil Beef Rolls are a quick and flavorful dish featuring seasoned ground beef combined with aromatic herbs and fresh vegetables wrapped in warm flour tortillas. Perfect as a light dinner or appetizer, served with dipping sauces and optional rice on the side.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (or chicken or pork)
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger (or 1/4 cup candied ginger)
  • 1-3 teaspoons Chinese 5 spice
  • 1/3 cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Thai chili sauce (homemade in notes)
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 4 Persian cucumbers, chopped
  • 2 cups cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Thai basil, chopped
  • 1/3 cup chopped roasted peanuts
  • 8-10 flour tortillas, warmed
  • Chili paste, for serving
  • Toasted sesame oil, for serving

Homemade Sweet Thai Chili Sauce (Optional)

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons lime zest
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 clove grated garlic

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with black pepper, breaking up the meat as it cooks until browned, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped garlic, fresh grated ginger, and Chinese 5 spice. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add Sauces and Simmer: Stir in the tamari or soy sauce and sweet Thai chili sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickly coats the beef, approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Mix in 2 tablespoons of chopped green onions and remove the skillet from heat.
  3. Warm Tortillas: Place one flour tortilla at a time in the microwave for 15 seconds until warm and pliable.
  4. Assemble Rolls: Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture down the center of each warmed tortilla. Top with chopped cucumber, cilantro, Thai basil, remaining green onions, and roasted peanuts.
  5. Roll the Tortillas: Fold the tortilla over the filling, then fold in the sides and ends, rolling forward to form a neat wrap. Repeat with remaining tortillas and ingredients.
  6. Serve: Serve the rolls warm with extra soy sauce, chili paste, and toasted sesame oil for dipping. For a more substantial meal, serve with rice on the side.

Notes

  • To make your own sweet Thai chili sauce, combine honey, ketchup, chili sauce, lime zest, lime juice, rice vinegar, tamari or soy sauce, grated ginger, and grated garlic in a jar. Shake or stir well.
  • Ground chicken or pork can be used instead of beef for variation.
  • Warm tortillas briefly to make them easier to roll and prevent cracking.
  • Add more or less Chinese 5 spice based on your preference for its distinctive flavor.
  • Serve with a side of steamed jasmine rice to turn it into a full dinner.
