Description

Tennessee Onion Dip is a creamy, cheesy appetizer featuring sweet caramelized onions baked to bubbly perfection. This rich and flavorful dip combines tender Vidalia onions with a blend of cheddar and smoked gouda cheeses, enhanced with garlic and thyme. Perfect for serving with crackers, crostini, or bread at parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions and Butter

  • 2 large chopped sweet onions (Vidalia preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Dip Base

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 ounces softened cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Cheeses

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese

Garnish

  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the dip.
  2. Cook onions: In a large oven-safe skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the chopped sweet onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and tender, which will take about 15 minutes.
  3. Combine dip ingredients: Remove the skillet from heat. Add 1 cup mayonnaise, 4 ounces softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, and 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese to the cooked onions. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Bake the dip: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake the mixture for 25 minutes or until it is hot and bubbling.
  5. Garnish and serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve immediately with crackers, crostini, or bread for dipping.

Notes

  • Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days to maintain freshness.
  • This dip does not freeze well, so it is best enjoyed fresh or within the recommended refrigeration time.
  • To reheat, warm the dip gently in the microwave or oven on low heat until the cheese melts and the dip is heated through.
  • For a milder flavor, consider reducing the garlic powder or substituting with garlic salt and adjusting the salt accordingly.
  • Use an oven-safe skillet or transfer the mixture to a baking dish before baking if your skillet is not oven-safe.
