Description

This Overnight Creme Brulee French Toast recipe offers a rich, indulgent breakfast with a creamy custard-soaked bread base topped with a buttery caramelized sugar crust. It’s easy to prepare the night before, perfect for a festive brunch or special breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramel Sauce

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup

French Toast

  • 12 slices thickly sliced day-old French bread
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups half and half cream
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the caramel sauce: In a small saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally until smooth and fully combined.
  2. Coat the pan: Pour the caramel mixture onto a large greased jelly roll pan (18x13x1 inches), spreading it evenly to cover the entire surface.
  3. Arrange bread: Place 12 slices of thickly sliced day-old French bread in a single layer over the caramel in the pan.
  4. Make custard mixture: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half cream, salt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well blended. Spoon the mixture evenly over each piece of bread.
  5. Refrigerate overnight: Cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate the French toast mixture overnight, allowing the bread to soak up the custard.
  6. Bake the French toast: The next morning, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the dish uncovered for 30 minutes until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
  7. Serve and garnish: Carefully remove from the pan. Serve warm topped with syrup, whipped cream, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Using day-old or stale French bread ensures the slices absorb the custard without becoming too soggy.
  • For a dairy-free variation, substitute half and half with coconut cream or almond milk blend.
  • To enhance the caramel flavor, sprinkle additional brown sugar on top before baking for a crispier crust.
  • Let the French toast cool for a few minutes after baking for easier slicing and serving.
