Frying and Breading
- Canola oil or oil of choice, for frying
Cheese
- 1 package vegan mozzarella cheese (we used Miyoko’s, see notes)
Batter
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Coating
- 1/2 cup + 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (divided: 2 tablespoons for batter, 1/2 cup for coating)
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
Serving
- Homemade marinara sauce, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the Oil. Preheat canola oil in a deep fryer or deep pan to 370 degrees Fahrenheit for frying.
- Prepare Cheese Sticks. Using a sharp knife, cut the vegan mozzarella block in half lengthwise, then slice into 1/2-inch thick sticks. Place them in the refrigerator while preparing the batter and coatings.
- Make the Batter. In a medium bowl, whisk together the unsweetened almond milk, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare Coatings. In a separate bowl, mix the bread crumbs with Italian seasoning and whisk to combine. In a third bowl, place the remaining 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and set aside.
- Set Up Breading Station. Arrange the batter bowl, flour bowl, and breadcrumb bowl in a row for efficient coating.
- Coat the Cheese. Remove the mozzarella sticks from the fridge. Use two sets of forks: one set to submerge each stick in the batter, then transfer to the flour bowl to coat completely. Using the dry forks, pick the coated stick, dip it back into the wet batter, shake off excess, then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture using the dry forks again. Place the breaded sticks on a plate or baking sheet. Repeat until all sticks are coated.
- Fry the Sticks. Fry the coated mozzarella sticks in the hot oil for 2 to 4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Cool. Transfer the fried sticks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil and allow them to cool until safe to handle.
- Serve. Serve warm with homemade marinara sauce for dipping and enjoy your crispy vegan mozzarella sticks!
Notes
- Using two sets of forks (one for wet batter, one for dry coatings) helps prevent clumping and mess.
- This recipe uses Miyoko’s vegan mozzarella cheese, but any vegan block mozzarella or stacked slices will work well.
- You can substitute Italian bread crumbs for plain bread crumbs mixed with Italian seasoning, ensuring they are vegan.
- For convenience, sticks can be frozen before frying.
- Baking alternative: Freeze breaded sticks 30 minutes to 1 hour, then bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes or until golden.
- Air fry alternative: Freeze breaded sticks 30 minutes to 1 hour, then air fry at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 minutes or until golden.
