Description

Homemade Strawberry Toaster Strudel features flaky puff pastry filled with sweet strawberry jam, baked to golden perfection, and topped with a smooth vanilla icing for a delightful, bakery-style treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastries

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • ¾ cup strawberry jam

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 Tablespoon water

Icing

  • ½ cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1½ teaspoons whole milk
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla powder, optional

Instructions

  1. Thaw and Prepare Pastry: Thaw puff pastry sheets according to package directions. Preheat the oven to 375℉ (190℃). Line two sheet pans with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Cut and Fill Bottom Layer: Working with one sheet of pastry at a time, unfold the dough and smooth the seams. Cut into six equal rectangles. Place rectangles on the prepared sheet pan. Spoon 2 tablespoons of strawberry jam in the center of each rectangle, spreading evenly while leaving a ½-inch border on all sides.
  3. Apply Egg Wash to Edges: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to make the egg wash. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg wash around the edges of each jam-filled rectangle.
  4. Prepare and Seal Top Layer: Unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and smooth the seams. Cut into six equal rectangles. Place one rectangle at a time on top of each jam-filled rectangle. Press gently to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges carefully, avoiding piercing through the dough.
  5. Apply Egg Wash on Top and Chill: Brush the tops of the sealed pastries with egg wash. Place the pastries in the freezer for 30 minutes to chill and set.
  6. Bake the Pastries: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Prepare Icing: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, whole milk, and optional vanilla powder until smooth.
  8. Drizzle Icing on Warm Pastries: Once the pastries have cooled slightly, drizzle the icing over the tops for a sweet finishing touch.

Notes

  • For best taste and texture, enjoy the strudels fresh from the oven.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat using a toaster oven or regular oven until heated through to maintain crispiness.
  • If vanilla powder is unavailable, substitute with ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract in the icing.
  • Ensure to gently seal the edges without piercing the dough to prevent jam leaks during baking.
