Description

These Halloween Rice Krispie Treats are a festive and fun twist on the classic treat, featuring a nutty browned butter base, pockets of gooey marshmallows, a chocolate drizzle, and colorful Halloween-themed sprinkles. Perfect for a spooky party or seasonal snack, they come with playful paper straw handles for easy eating.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1 bag (10 ounces) jumbo marshmallows
  • 8 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 cup small marshmallows

Decorations

  • 12 paper straws
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted (for drizzling)
  • Halloween-themed sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare a Workspace: Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the sides for easy removal of the treats.
  2. Brown the Butter: In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Continue to cook it, stirring frequently, until the butter turns golden brown with a nutty aroma, being careful not to burn it. Remove from heat.
  3. Melt the Jumbo Marshmallows: Add the jumbo marshmallows to the browned butter in the saucepan. Return the pan to low heat and stir continuously until the marshmallows are completely melted and smooth.
  4. Combine with Rice Krispies: Remove the saucepan from heat and quickly stir in the 8 cups of Rice Krispies cereal until all the cereal is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  5. Add Small Marshmallows: Gently fold in the 1 cup of small marshmallows into the mixture, creating pockets of marshmallow goodness.
  6. Press into Baking Dish: Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Use a greased spatula or lightly buttered hands to press the mixture evenly into the pan, ensuring it’s firm but not overly compacted.
  7. Set and Cut: Allow the mixture to cool and set for about 30 minutes to 1 hour until firm enough to cut easily.
  8. Insert Straws: After the treats have set, cut the mixture into 24 squares. Insert a paper straw into the bottom of each square to serve as a handle.
  9. Chocolate Drizzle: Melt the semisweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of each treat.
  10. Add Sprinkles: While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle Halloween-themed sprinkles over each treat for a festive look.
  11. Final Set and Enjoy: Allow the chocolate drizzle to set for 15-20 minutes. Once set, the Halloween Rice Krispie treats are ready to serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use parchment paper with overhang for easy removal of the treats from the pan.
  • Brown the butter carefully over medium-low heat to avoid burning and to develop a rich nutty flavor.
  • Press the mixture firmly but not too much to keep the treats light and chewy.
  • The small marshmallows add gooey pockets, but you can omit them if preferred.
  • For gluten-free variation, ensure to use gluten-free Rice Krispies cereal.
  • Store treats in an airtight container to maintain freshness up to 3 days.
