Description

These Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joe Sliders are a delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe sandwich, featuring savory ground beef simmered in a tangy tomato sauce mixture, melted cheese, and golden toasted Hawaiian rolls. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal or party appetizer, these sliders combine the best of sloppy joes with crispy grilled cheese flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1/4 cup Yellow Onion, Diced
  • 1/4 cup Green Bell Pepper, Diced
  • 3-4 Garlic Cloves, Minced
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 8 oz Tomato Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar

Slider Assembly

  • 12 Count Package of Kings Hawaiian Rolls
  • 3-4 tbsp Mayonnaise or Butter
  • 4-6 Slices Colby Jack Cheese or any preferred cheese flavor

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sloppy Joe Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the diced onions, green bell peppers, and minced garlic until the meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are soft. Drain any excess grease. Add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine all ingredients and reduce the heat to low. Allow the mixture to simmer gently while you prepare the rolls.
  2. Prepare the Rolls: Cut each Hawaiian roll in half horizontally. Spread mayonnaise or butter generously on the cut sides of the rolls. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the top halves of the rolls, mayo side down, into the skillet and cook until they become golden brown and slightly crispy. Remove these toasted tops and set aside.
  3. Assemble and Melt: Place all the bottom halves of the rolls in the same skillet. Top each with a slice of Colby Jack cheese, followed by a generous spoonful of the sloppy joe meat mixture. Cover each with the toasted top rolls, placing the crispy side facing up. Turn off the heat on the skillet and cover with a lid to trap the heat and allow the cheese to melt completely, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Serve: Once the cheese has melted, remove the sliders from the skillet and serve hot. Enjoy these flavorful, cheesy sloppy joe sliders immediately for best taste and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version of the sloppy joe filling.
  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the meat mixture.
  • Use your favorite cheese variety to customize the flavor of your sliders.
  • If you don’t have Hawaiian rolls, soft dinner rolls or slider buns work well as an alternative.
  • To make ahead, prepare the meat filling in advance and assemble the sliders just before serving.
