A simple and delicious fried dough recipe featuring a soft, slightly sweet dough fried to golden perfection. Perfect as a warm snack or dessert, with optional powdered or cinnamon sugar dusting.
Ingredients
Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frying and Topping
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Cinnamon sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Mix dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a separate small bowl, mix together the milk and vanilla extract thoroughly.
- Form dough: Gradually pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients while stirring until a sticky dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add additional milk one tablespoon at a time until it comes together.
- Knead dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about one minute to ensure an even texture.
- Shape dough balls: Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions and roll each portion into a smooth ball.
- Heat oil: In a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or skillet, heat approximately 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a candy or instant-read thermometer to monitor the temperature accurately.
- Fry dough balls: Carefully add a few dough balls into the hot oil without overcrowding. Fry each side for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Drain excess oil: Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove fried dough balls and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Repeat frying: Continue frying the remaining dough balls in batches until all are cooked.
- Finish and serve: Allow the fried dough to cool slightly, then optionally dust with powdered or cinnamon sugar. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- The dough should be sticky but manageable; use flour on your hands and surface to prevent sticking.
- Use a candy thermometer to maintain the oil temperature at 350°F to ensure proper frying and avoid greasy dough.
- Frying time is short; do not overcook to keep the dough tender inside and golden outside.
- Best eaten fresh and warm for optimal texture and flavor.
- Calories do not include oil absorbed during frying or toppings like powdered sugar.
