French Toast Sticks
- 4 slices of thick-cut bread (preferably brioche or Texas toast)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Cooking spray or a little melted butter for greasing the air fryer basket
For Serving
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar (optional)
- Fresh berries (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a shallow bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and slightly frothy.
- Cut the Bread into Sticks: Trim the crusts off the bread slices if desired, then cut each slice into 3 or 4 evenly sized sticks to create manageable finger-sized portions.
- Dip the Bread Sticks: One at a time, dip each bread stick into the custard mixture, turning to coat all sides evenly. Allow the bread to soak just enough to absorb some liquid but not become soggy.
- Preheat and Prepare the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 to 5 minutes. Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket with cooking spray or melted butter to prevent sticking.
- Arrange and Cook: Place the dipped French toast sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they don’t touch to allow proper air circulation. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Serve Warm: Once cooked, carefully remove the French toast sticks from the air fryer. Serve immediately with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh berries if desired for a delicious breakfast or snack.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread for best results as it holds the custard better without falling apart.
- Do not soak the bread sticks for too long to avoid sogginess in the air fryer.
- Air fryer cooking times may vary depending on the model; adjust accordingly for perfect crispiness.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond or oat milk.
- These French toast sticks can be reheated in the air fryer for a couple of minutes to regain crispness.
