Description

This classic Hamburger Steaks in Creamy Dill Sauce recipe features tender beef patties cooked to perfection and smothered in a rich, flavorful creamy dill sauce. Perfect for a comforting dinner, this dish combines simple ingredients with a luscious sauce made from sautéed onions, garlic, and fresh dill for an elevated home-cooked meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion – grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Creamy Dill Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion – diced
  • 2 garlic cloves – minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill – more for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Mixture: Into a large bowl, grate the yellow onion. Add ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  2. Shape the Patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then press down with the palm of your hand or a spatula to form patties about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Set aside while preparing the sauce ingredients.
  3. Chop Ingredients for Sauce: Finely dice the yellow onion, mince the garlic cloves, and chop the fresh dill. Set these aside for the sauce cooking process.
  4. Cook the Hamburger Steaks: Heat olive oil and unsalted butter over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for 5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer the cooked patties to a clean plate.
  5. Sauté Aromatics: In the same skillet, reduce heat to low and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook gently for about 2 minutes until fragrant and softened. Stir in salt, black pepper, and all-purpose flour, mixing well to form a roux.
  6. Add Liquids and Simmer: Pour in the low sodium chicken broth while scraping the brown bits from the skillet bottom with a wooden spoon. Let the mixture simmer for 2 minutes to thicken slightly.
  7. Finish the Sauce: Stir in the heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  8. Combine and Heat Through: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them. Simmer for 5-6 minutes so the patties heat through fully and absorb the flavors of the sauce.
  9. Serve: Garnish with additional chopped dill and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately for a comforting main course.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and all-purpose flour to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • Make sure not to overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender.
  • If fresh dill is unavailable, dried dill can be used but reduce the amount to 1 tablespoon.
  • Leftover sauce can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
