Description

A delightful appetizer featuring a creamy wheel of brie wrapped in flaky puff pastry, topped with sweet fig jam and crunchy walnuts, baked until golden brown and served warm with fruits, crackers, or crostini.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry and Cheese

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry thawed
  • 10 ounce brie cheese wheel

Toppings

  • 1/3 cup fig jam
  • 1/4 cup walnuts chopped

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon of water

For Serving

  • Fruit, crackers, or crostini
  • Rosemary or thyme sprigs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Gently roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to a 10-12 inch square. Place the brie wheel in the center of the pastry.
  3. Add Toppings: Spread the fig jam evenly on top of the brie, then sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the jam.
  4. Fold Pastry: Cut slits at each corner of the pastry toward the center, stopping about 1/2 inch from the brie, creating four triangular flaps. Fold each flap up and over the brie, overlapping like a pinwheel, and brush the seams with egg wash to seal.
  5. Chill Wrapped Brie: Place the wrapped brie in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to help firm the pastry and prevent the cheese from melting too quickly when baking.
  6. Brush with Egg Wash and Bake: After chilling, brush the entire pastry surface with the egg wash and bake on the prepared sheet for 30 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Accompany with fruit, crackers, crostini, and garnish with rosemary or thyme if desired.

Notes

  • Customize with your favorite jam flavors like apricot or raspberry and different nuts such as pecans or almonds.
  • Toasting the nuts before adding enhances their flavor and texture.
  • Chilling the wrapped brie before baking is critical to prevent the cheese from melting too fast and leaking out.
  • You can prepare ahead by wrapping the brie and storing it in the refrigerator up to 3 hours before baking. Apply the egg wash just before baking.
  • Best served fresh; leftovers can be stored wrapped in plastic in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in a 400°F oven to retain crispness.
